6 cool computer games

Category: By neogeo

A list of cool internet games that you probably wouldn't play without seeing them here.

You go on the internet and you see games that are of interest to you, but there is only one problem. The game either requires you to download it, sign up by adding your email address and other personal information, or paying for it. I don't like to do any of the above so when I'm browsing search engines online for games I pick some rather weird games that are strange, yet very fun. Here are seven of my favorite computer games that don't require any personal information, money, or downloads to play.

  1. Avoider

Avoider is not written in the English language, but you don't need to read the words on the game. Simply click the first word in the middle of the game screen to start. What you do is you move your computer mouse around to keep away from the little pink guy. He will jump across the screen and use some weapons. It sounds strange, but it is strangely addicting. I can get about 1,000 points.
  2. Press the Spacebar

Press the Spacebar is exactly as it sounds. Simply press the spacebar key on your keyboard as many times as you can in the amount of time you are given. It's weird, but it can get addicting. If you go for the longest amount of time you will get surprisingly tired from it. My best is about 60 times in the five seconds.
  3. Alphabet Game

The Alphabet Game is a test of your typing speed. You have to type every letter in the alphabet as fast as you can in order. You can make as many mistakes as you need, it just doesn't let you move on until you hit the letter. You will slowly get better at the game, however I don't think it in any way relates to your real words per minute speed. My best time was 5 seconds.
  4. The Idiot Test

The Idiot Test is surprisingly an extremely popular game. The screen tells your something to do and you move up levels by clicking on certain things. It's rather addicting after you keep failing the same parts over and over. I cannot tell you exactly “how smart” it told me I was, but I do know that it was when you were told like three blues, four reds, two greens ect. and the list got to big to remember.
  5. Rag Doll

Rag Doll isn't technically a game as there is no objective. You simply watch a rag doll fall and hit balls and roll off and keep falling. You can grab control of the doll and throw it around. This is more of something you have to look at to fully grasp what I am talking about. I spent at least thirty minutes playing with this.
  6. Home Run

Home Run is one of the strangest items on the list. You control an extremely drunk man as he walks forward. You use your mouse to keep him balanced. If he falls one way you have to make him lean the other direction. It gets harder as it goes on. I can get to about 80 feet before I fail.

I'll bet you didn't beat my high scores. After you play these long enough I admit some of them might get boring, but that's when you simply switch to a new game. Since you entered no personal information, paid no money, and downloaded nothing you're free to switch games as often as you like.

Halo 3 - A hands on experience

Category: By neogeo
Halo 3
Halo 3 will be released on Xbox 360

Is video gaming on the threshold of a new era with the arrival of consoles such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii? How far can PC gaming push the envelope of graphics and connectivity? Over the next few weeks we will be taking a more considered look at the industry and its future.

Halo 3, due for release on 25 September, is one of the most anticipated videogames of the year. It is Microsoft's heavy assault weapon in the console wars with Sony and Nintendo; and its success or failure could go a long way in determining which firm emerges victorious.

A science-fiction adventure, the first two titles have sold more than 15m copies and tens of thousands of people play the online element to the second game every day.

It has spawned comic books, action figures, spin-off games and a highly-secretive project with The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

Fans of Halo have been teased with videos and screenshots of the new title for months, and even had the chance to play an element of the multiplayer aspect of the game in a limited trial, but the all-important single player game remains a mystery - until now.

Dark aesthetic

One level was on show at a recent press event in Amsterdam and journalists were finally able to pick up the controller and play Halo 3, after three years in development.

The level, called Tsavo Highway, opens in a bleak, grimy hanger. The aesthetic is dark and moody, and a handful of disorientated marines need your help.

A near-by Warthog jeep offers a way out and as you slide behind the steering wheel, your comrades join you as you head out into some dingy tunnels.

The setting is grandiose, a desert filled with battered highways, damaged structures, cities put to the torch

For a moment it appears as though Halo 3 has crash landed in Gears of War territory - the gothic and crepuscular Xbox 360 title. But after a few bends and turns you emerge onto the familiar candy-coloured landscape so familiar to Halo players.

And this is where the first disappointment sets in - graphically Halo 3 is more of an evolutionary leap than brave new world. It is Halo 2 on steroids with familiar looking colours, textures and flavours.

Everything has a high definition sheen but there are noticeable jagged edges to objects and buildings, and close up some textures look distinctly rough.

It should be made very clear that the game we were playing was beta code and not finished game, but I will admit to feeling underwhelmed.

Swoop overhead

Happily, the graphics engine of Halo 3 is able to throw much more action onto the screen than previous titles. Battles are definitely bigger, huge ships swoop overhead, marines and aliens engage in fierce action, and there is a tangible feeling of epic scope.

Bungie has clearly listened to fans who felt that Halo 2 was too narrow, with much of the action having a scripted feeling.

Battles are fought above and below, with enemies encircling your position and making good use of the landscape. Your marines curse and shout and are much more a part of the game than the previous Halo titles.

Master Chief
Master Chief is the game's hero

The setting is grandiose, a desert filled with battered highways, damaged structures, cities put to the torch.

Most of the action takes place in vehicles and because of the increased scope there is a feeling sometimes of being sidelined in the action somewhat, or of being unsure of what the primary target or focus of any given situation should be.

The version of the game I tested also had a few glitches, most noticeably with AI; on one occasion about seven marines stood rooted to the ground all staring off into the distance at nothing in particular, while the enemies often seemed a little clueless, either running away for no good reason or oblivious of being shot at point-blank range.

It was a little disorientating being thrown into a level with no context and so I could not gauge how the story of Halo 3 is emerging.

From the small amount I saw, it is clear that Bungie has decided to play safe and re-work the rougher edges of previous title Halo 2, rather than re-invent the wheel.

For such a prestigious franchise, it is a sensible business decision and hopefully a sensible gaming decision.

Halo, after all, garnered high praise for helping re-define first person shooters, rather than re-inventing them.

Killzone 2 - A hands on look

Category: By neogeo
Killzone 2 has always been about delivering on a promise. When the first trailer for the game emerged two years ago the sounds of jaws dropping to the floor reverberated around the industry.

Soon after, only the gnashing of grinding teeth was heard when it emerged that the trailer was not being run on PlayStation 3 hardware.

Two years on and Amsterdam-based Guerrilla games is working at turning the naysayers into believers. The game is Sony's Exocet missile at the heart of Xbox 360 owners; a rocket designed to convince doubters that the PlayStation 3 has the explosive power to blow away its rivals.

The first hints that Guerrilla has something very special up its sleeve have begun to emerge.

Sat down in front of a playable level it is immediately clear that Killzone 2 will be one of the most cinematic and immersive games ever produced on a console.

The raw processing power of the PlayStation 3 has been harnessed to create a level of detail seen only in a handful of games on high-end PCs.

The dynamic lighting, animation, high-definition environments and details, such as plaster flying off walls and pillars caught in crossfire, create a sense of place and reality that takes games to a new level of realism.

Cinematic scene

The level starts with a cinematic scene of airborne troop carriers swooping out of the sky and into the battlefield.

When the cutscene ends Killzone 2 moves seamlessly into the in-game action; smoke drifts across the street, lightning flashes realistically in the night sky, sparks of bullet ricochets fill the night and a soldier on fire staggers across your path.

Killzone 2 is an archetypal shooter - a futuristic action title that draws on the symbolism of World War II to create a sense of familiarity.

Killzone 2
Shoot or be shot - that is the ethos of Killzone

The game mechanics of the level I saw are not particularly innovative - it is a classic run and shoot adventure, mixing different weapon types and simple tasks to good effect.

The first Killzone title suffered from a number of glitches and bugs, poor AI and a strangely awkward control interface.

This time around, the game's control scheme is solid, the AI of the enemy troops looks on course to be first rate, while there is still some work to be done on specific combat areas, such as throwing grenades.

The violence is intense and the title is destined for an 18 certificate. It could also spark further debate over the use of photo-real violence in videogames.

The one level I played had been in development for the last six months, and with such hyper-real detail it is easy to see why the game is not due for release until 2008.

The developers behind the game I spoke to exuded a tangible confidence when talking about the game; Guerrilla and Sony know they have a special title on their hands.

The high watermark for realism and immersion in videogames could soon be about to be lifted.
